The Presidential Book of Secrets

The White House receives daily intelligence reporting and analysis in the form of the President's Daily Brief (PDB), provided by former intelligence officer Priess. She interviewed every living president as well as nearly one hundred other participants associated with its production and delivery in order to understand its format, production process and final form.

This book presents an entertaining, amusing, and often surprising history of the Personal Data Bank from Kennedy to Obama.

Oval Office Conspiracies

Though Congress and an independent counsel have conducted multiple investigations, no hard evidence to back the charge that Carter administration officials conspired to hold America hostage while aiding Iran smuggle uranium into our nation has ever come to light. But this allegation persists amidst political gossip, Middle Eastern conspiracy theory and social media; occasionally appearing in serious books such as Kai Bird's new bio of Carter. Furthermore, it was recently referenced in press articles.

Conspiracy theories involving high levels of government often fail because they fail to take account of how politics operates from within. People in high places often surround themselves with both allies and enemies who weigh against grand conspiracies; those whose future political lives, and in many cases lives, depend on not murdering fellow citizens or covering up an assassination have an incentive for remaining quiet about conspiracies involving murdering fellow citizens or covering up details surrounding an assassination are especially at risk if their silence goes unchecked.

Conspiracy theorists who suggest that those in power are plotting against one another or withholding vital secrets have it all wrong; their theory revolves around massive conspiracies involving hundreds of people over decades that never come about.

Consider, for instance, a two-person conspiracy. These bank robbers share an interest in keeping their crime a secret while also having an incentive not to reveal each other's identities to the press - this type of collaboration would likely prove much more fruitful than large groups that share nothing other than their hatred and their motivation to profit from assassinations attempts.

So it is hardly shocking that an Oval Office meeting between four election conspiracy theorists and President Trump on December 7 degenerated into a bitter and heated shouting match, according to Axios this week. Furthermore, allegations about Carter not receiving warning of Iran bombing has spawned all manner of ridiculous conspiracy theories that has made headlines across media platforms and led to further misinforming.

The Gutenberg Bible

One of the greatest inventions ever was the Gutenberg Bible, printed using individual pieces of metal type rather than written by hand. The first edition, printed in 1455 in Mainz, Germany was one of Europe's first major works printed using moveable type printing technology and established standards that remain unmatched today.

As time progressed, printing books in multiple languages became easier, leading to unprecedented reading rates among European society. With its publication came the Bible, marking an inflection point that led directly to Protestant Reformation less than 100 years later. Through printing revolution, knowledge was made accessible and ultimately transformed our world today.

The Library of Congress owns an exceptional copy of the Gutenberg Bible, Biblia Latina, acquired in 1978. This version is one of approximately 20 complete copies that remain undamaged today, and one of four vellum copies that remain. Each page in the book boasts initials in red and blue while some text features gold leaf embellishment.

Scribes had produced vernacular editions of the Bible prior to Gutenberg, but these editions were costly and only produced for specific uses. Once Gutenberg introduced his moveable-type press, however, more people could afford and read their local language Bible text - profoundly shaping human culture at large - making this part of human history that much more influential for its impactful legacy on modern civilization - something which makes the Library of Congress proud to own a copy.

The Library of Congress offers online resources about the Gutenberg Bible that are available in multiple languages. Furthermore, reference professionals working in our Divisions that specialize in international materials are always on hand to answer any queries about its significance and can be reached via Ask a Librarian; moreover for further insight see our Selected Bibliography and Related Resources within this LibGuide.

The Vertical Bar

The vertical bar, commonly referred to as a pipe symbol, is an indispensible element in mathematics, computing and typography. It has multiple names associated with specific meanings: sheffer stroke (in logic), polon, Sheffer line, verti-bar or vbar and stick as well as vertical line or divider as well as slash or pipe symbols - each often used with specific uses in other disciplines such as writing programs.

As well as its appearance in early printings of the Geneva Bible and King James Version, broken bars were also commonly used to demarcate margin notes with alternative translations from the original text. Unicode represents this symbol as U+00A6 BROKEN BAR.
